The most recommended hot spring in Hokkaido is Noboribetsu Onsen (登別温泉). It is 1 hour and 10 minutes by JR limited express from Sapporo. Near the hot spring town, as you can see on this page, there is a group of craters called Jigokudani (地獄谷). Jigokudani is the source of hot springs.
