If you want an in-depth experience of Japan’s “Zen” culture, you should visit Eiheiji Temple in Fukui Prefecture. Many monks practice Zen at this temple, and you can experience it too. There is also a beautiful traditional temple town around the temple. Eiheiji is located about 150 km northeast of Kyoto and is covered in snow in winter. If you’re traveling to Kyoto or any other place in the winter, I’d recommend visiting Eiheiji as well!
