Together with January, February is the coldest period in Japan. Early February and mid February, it is not uncommon for the lowest temperature to fall below freezing. There are many sunny days, but it is very cold when the wind is strong. Coats, gloves and scarves are a must.
It rarely snows in Tokyo in February. If it does snow, transportation is disrupted and trains and buses may be delayed.
In late February, you can feel the transition from winter to spring. However, the weather is unstable.
If you visit Nagano or Hokkaido at this time of year, please be careful what you wear, as it still snows and is significantly colder than Tokyo.
