Japan still has a “geisha” culture. Geisha are women who entertain their guests wholeheartedly with Japanese dances and songs. Geisha is completely different from the courtesan “Oiran” that existed during the Edo period. In Kyoto, the geisha is called “geigi”. Apprentice young geisha are called “maiko”. Recently, women who have worked for the company may become geisha. Previously, I have interviewed geisha several times. They have learned very intellectual and delicate manners and are valuable successors of traditional culture. In Kyoto, events are held in spring and autumn where you can watch geisha dance. Geisha also play an active part in the Gion Festival in July. Please try the geisha culture!
